What is Diabetes?
Diabetes is a disease characterized by the body’s inability to properly process food into energy. Our bodies are supposed to turn food into glucose, or sugar – the source of energy. Your pancreas produces insulin to help process the glucose, but diabetes occurs when your body doesn’t produce insulin, as with Type 1 diabetes, or your body doesn’t respond to insulin, as with Type 2 diabetes. This results in high blood sugar. If ignored or left untreated for too long, high blood sugar can cause serious health complications including heart disease, blindness, kidney failure, and more.
Our physicians and care team can work with you to identify early risks of diabetes and help prevent the disease before it occurs. We also work to manage and treat symptoms of patients with Type 1 or Type 2 diabetes. Treatment can include medications, lifestyle changes, tools and technology such as insulin pumps, and patient referrals to a diabetes specialist when needed.
